I’ve finished my first week in Andong, Korea (well, work week), and things are moving along well. I’ll skip the boring stuff, but work went well, and I got my papers through immigration.
The bestest news is that I moved into my apartment after a week at the Hotel 9, which seems to specialize in blue hallway lighting. The apartment is great and is close to the school.
I’ve spent the last two days buying stuff for it though: lamp, iron, fan, etc. There are about 5 “marts” within a few blocks of my house. These are basically little Best Buys. I have no idea how there is demand for this many stores, but I’ve been walking from store to store to find the best prices because some things are REALLY expensive (e.g., a regular $15 coffee pot is like $90 here and my cheap fan cost me $50).
Here’s a short video tour:

Cute place. You’re super close to work… I bet Gumby and Pokey are having having wacky adventures in your new apartment. hehehe
I was going to ask about, but just saw, Gumby and Pokey. Are they going to have their own Mr. Bill-style show about Adam in South Korea?
I’m intrigued by the parks and gardens surrounding the school. Are they community gardens or what?
And what’s with all the Samsung-branded apartments?
I love the video. Keep it up.
I have no idea about the Samsung apartments… seemingly everything is made by Samsung, Hyundai, or LG.
As for the gardens, it’s really great because they are everywhere you look. The park in the video is a public park. I walked up to the top the other day and there was some workout equipment… including an enormous hula hoop: http://www.flickr.com/photos/adamgn/3813740850/in/set-72157621891485517/
But the park was beautiful. It was really large and had a lot of trails. It’s very mountainous here so the trails were somewhat strenuous.
Love it! It’s very cute and compact…
adam
why different slippers for different rooms?
Adam,
Thanks for the video. Love what you’ve done with the place, darling. The older I get the more I feel like less is more. I’m admiring the simplicity of your setup.
So what’s the deal with all the apts. being owned by Samsung? Feels kinda creepy in a Big Brotherish sort of way.
I know I’ve said this before but it bears repeating. I think you’re amazing brave to move to somewhere that is totally unknown. You’re pics gave me a sense that, totally theoretically I could move to Korea. Cool.
